Everyone has had problems with nosy parents, but some have to deal with this issue more critically than others. Some deal with a type of parent known as the “Helicopter Parent” Helicopter parenting is a type of parenting where the parent is overly involved in the life of a child and authoritarian over their youngster ("What Is Helicopter Parenting?"). This ever-growing parenting style is growing and spreading throughout society, wreaking havoc upon youth. Although many believe that helicopter parenting benefits children by keeping them safe, helicopter parenting is detrimental to children overall because it damages their social skills, causes psychological damage, and creates a dependency on the parents. Their main source of worrying stems from a piece of urban propaganda amongst modern parents, largely fearing a seemingly dangerous issue: kidnapping. In reality, this threat is horribly blown out of proportion. According to the Polly Klaas foundation, “99.8% of the children who go missing do come home” (“National Kidnaping Facts”) Even then, helicopter parenting will most likely cause their kid to be more inclined to run away from home. Most missing youth cases are runaways, not kidnappings. (“National Kidnapping Facts”) Therefore, only one hundred of the seventy million children were abducted by strangers. (Kids count data center) Even so, half of these children came home. A fraction of one percent of children that go missing is not worth the destruction of a child’s cognitive and social development. Helicopter parenting results in long lasting psychological damage. Unhealthy ways of dealing with their offspring such as giving the child too much praise or spoiling them can result in children feeling worthless. The over-saturation of positive reinforcement creates an opposite effect. (Sullivan) It makes them feel having little to no value of themselves, mainly due to their treatment being comparable to an animal that is being coaxed. They struggle with depression and anxiety which stems from the great fear of failure that is brainwashed into their mind
