The United States should not support the North Dakota and Keystone Pipeline The North Dakota and Keystone pipeline is a Canadian and U.S pipeline that runs from western Canada to the southern part of the U.S. The pipeline is currently owned by TransCanada Corporation. Its construction began in the in 1980s and is continuing to be built. For some time now, there have been many contradictions on the North Dakota pipeline construction. Many U.S. citizens think it is a great idea because it can provide jobs and believe it is an easier way to transport oil. Many have said that the pipeline should not be built because it is constructed on sacred land. citizens, and gives the U.S the advantage to be more energy dependent; but the pipeline has caused multiple injuries and deaths. The pipeline is useful by transporting oil from Alberta, Canada to Steele City, Nebraska. This pipeline makes refining markets safer and cost effective. This helps the economy and contributes jobs, although, most of them pay minimum wage. This is a great disadvantage for those who are supporting a family. Since the beginning of the construction of this pipeline there have been many injuries. Many hardworking innocent people have experienced extensive burns, loss of limbs, brain injuries, and permanent disfiguration. There has been roughly 500 deaths since the beginning of the pipeline. Which could have been avoided if there was a more thorough protection and insured plan. Some have not realized other important issues that this pipeline has and can cause. The North Dakota Keystone pipelines continued construction close to sacred land to the Sioux tribe. The people of the tribe are afraid that the continued construction could eventually end up destroying the last of their water source . The Sioux people are afraid the pipes might fail once again and cause destruction of their land . The destruction could lead to damaging the environment and wildlife . For example , by doing this they could actually be worsening the climate. Burning fossil fuel is one of the main flaws ,It releases C02 and this could truly end up harming everyone in the area. “CRS estimates that oil going through the keystone pipeline could result an increase on emissions of greenhouse gases equally or more so between 770,800 and 4.3 million commuter vehicles” (Jackson) . Overall transporting the oil and the construction itself will have a negative effect on the people and on the location where the people stand . The Sioux people argue that the pipeline should not be continued close to their land , the area is sacred to them and they refuse to let their guard down. They should not be constructing the pipeline if that land has been given to the native people . The land is sacred to them and by doing this to them it could cause them to be emotional because they feel highly spiritual about the land. “It’s about our rights as native people to this land. It’s about our rights to worship. It’s about our rights to be able to call a place home, and it’s our rights to water”- ( Brady)
