Pros And Cons Of Liberal Arts Education

There definitely are both pros and cons to a liberal arts education. On the positive side the student gains a wide variety of knowledge and a chance to expand on ideas they hadn’t yet heard of. There’s so many benefits to education that it’s difficult to quantify them all. People are able to better understand one another if they’ve learned about each others backgrounds (which can come up in a global pluralism class) and there’s countless ways having general knowledge can help you through life. I also think that liberal arts educations aren’t for everyone. I have more than a few friends who graduated with liberal arts degrees that weren’t technical and they are making minimum wage while trying to pay off heavy school loans. I have also been a hiring manager and on multiple occasions taken employees who had experience over those with degrees. When I first started hiring for my previous company I was shocked at how many of these candidates who were applying already had bachelors degrees. I was hiring for receptionist and accounts payable positions at the time. I am in no way saying that a liberal arts education is bad, but I haven’t seen that it prepares people to enter the workforce or gives them much of a true advantage. I have taught college grads how to write a professional emails, how to use a fax machine (and what a fax machine is), how to dress appropriately for a job, how to address a letter (and place the stamp), how to dial long distance on an analog phone, and many other tasks that were quite frankly remedial in nature. I am 23 and have SO much to learn, but it bothered me that these people who were older than me and had degrees were so ill prepared for life. Not that college should necessarily teach them this, but I think learning how to interview, ask for a raise, interact in a professional environment, ect are more pressing matters than some liberal arts
