ARGUMENTS FOR AND AGAINST MOTHER-CHILD PRISON PROGRAMS 3
In regards to federally sentenced women, the number of incarcerations is small. The aftermath of this concludes in this population not being conducted to many adaptations to reach specific needs of these women. For example, two-thirds of women in prison have children under five years of age, are regularly single parents living beneath the poverty line, and living apart is difficult for both the mothers and their children. The prison system is beginning to acquire more infants being delivered in their facilities. The reason for this is connected to the proportion of women charged with criminal activity broadening over the course of the past three decades. This raises questions concerning Mother-Child Prison Programs in regards of the child’s safety, life beginning within prison walls, and if the mothers should be granted the privilege of raising their child while serving their sentence, for example. When looking at the broad topic of incarcerated mothers having their children accompany them in prison programs, one has to consider the following: is one best raised by their mother under any circumstance?
