There are equal concentrations inside and outside the cell, the solution is isotonic because there are equal amount of water molecules inside and outside the cell. The plant cell is not exactly firm and strong because the vacuole is not full and swollen.

There are is a high concentration of solute outside the cell than there is inside the cell, and there is a higher concentration of pure water inside the plant cell. The solution is hypotonic because there is more solute concentration on the outside of the cell.

Osmosis in animal cells

In hypotonic solutions, animal cells swell up and explode as they cannot become turgid because animal cells don’t have cell walls that could prevent the cell from bursting. In hypertonic solutions, water molecules diffuse out of the cell because of osmosis, the cell will then shrink. Animal cells will always be surrounded by isotonic solutions. This is to avoid the bursting or shrinking of cells.
