Should College Athletes Get Paid?
In the mid 1900s there was a Midwestern university that paid a town blacksmith, lawyer, and four railroad employees to play football. Because of this, the NCAA had to adopt a ‘Sanity Code’ which limits college players to only receive scholarships as a source of payment. This incident has caused an abuse of the system which obviously didn’t work, so why are asking the same questions? Why are we asking to pay college athletes?The payment of college athletes for their contributions on the field wouldn’t be beneficial because it would lead to colleges becoming less economically affordable not only for the college, but for the students as well.

College athletes should get paid because even with scholarships, the cost of their basic needs outweighs the amount of money they have to pay. According to Krikor Meshefejian the author of the article “Pay to Play”, he states the some student-athletes have to leave school early because they don’t have enough money to continue their education, but by giving them a little extra money, they would remain in school and complete their education. Paying the athletes could benefit the institutions and students by giving them an education. According to a study done in 2015, “College graduates earn approximately 84% money than high school graduates” (Hsu 3). By paying college student-athletes just enough money to cover their basic needs, they are given the chance to earn almost double the amount of money of a high school graduate, which would help the school as well as the economy. Even though full scholarships don’t pay for everything, the athletes can still get loans which would cover the cost of their other
