CT- pros and cons of CT versus plain x-ray and MRI In the world of medical diagnostic imaging, modern advances in imaging technology allow Health Care Providers (HCPs) to look inside a person’s body through the development of detailed pictures or scans to diagnose disease, trauma, or abnormalities within a patient. Computed Tomography (CT), Plain X-rays (Radiographs) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) are three of the exams used by HCPs today. These three diagnostic techniques are used for similar purposes; however, HCPs must decide which one is appropriate. AAOS (2017) defines CT as “an imaging tool that combines x-rays with computer technology to produce a more detailed, cross-sectional image of your body. A CT scan lets your doctor …show more content…

This means that exposure to even small doses of radiation should be avoided, if receiving that dose will have no direct benefit. The FDA (2017) advises that since a plain x-ray and a CT scan both require ionized radiation exposure, they should either answer a medical question, treat a disease, or guide a procedure. Plain x-rays are the most common and widely available imaging technique. Even if you require more sophisticated imaging, you will probably get an x-ray first according to AAOS (2017). This may rule out the need to expose a patient to the higher doses of CT. Time is also a consideration when it comes to critical diagnoses. Pressman (2017) indicated that a patient suspected of possible intracranial hemorrhaging would benefit from the time saved by a CT over an MRI, not to mention that CT is better detecting bleeding and bone fractures than an MRI. Patients with metal implants can’t be scanned using MRI due to the heavy magnets so a CT scan would have to be performed. Understanding the pros and cons of CT versus plain x-ray and MRI helps HCPs prescribe the right exam for their patients considering radiation, allergy, practicality, and financial …show more content…
