Planned Parenthood was started over 100 years ago when Margaret Sanger, Ethel Byrne, and Fania Mindell opened the first of many birth control clinics in the U.S., in the Brownsville section of the New York borough of Brooklyn. The three ladies distributed birth control, birth control advice and birth control information; but they were arrested and jailed after violating the Comstock Act, where they were accused of distributing obscene materials at the clinic. The past 100 years have been a battle to keep the funding of Planned Parenthood continuous by the government. They offer birth control options and consultation such as the IUD, pill and shot, emergency contraception (the morning-after pill). General health care such as; checkups for sexual health problems, colon cancer screening, flu vaccinations, rape crisis counseling, well women exams, physicals, smoking help, UTI testing and treatment. LGBT Services, Men’s Health, Patient Education on sex and other services, pregnancy testing, STD Testing, Treatment, and vaccines as well as other women services that include and are NOT limited to abortions and abortion consultation. Due to the Hyde Amendment organizations such as Planned Parenthood are not permitted to using any federal funds to pay for an abortion except in certain and special cases of rape and incest. However, that does not mean that there is no outside funding, other than the patients, that go towards abortions. Much to everyone’s disbelief, Planned Parenthood doesn’t work off of only federal fundings, they receive Medicaid Reimbursements from every patient that has a private insurance and also from Title X funding that is put towards all preventative care.
