A common goal for most societies is to deter or eliminate poaching. Therefore, solutions to poaching can be directly geared to the rationale of poachers. Eliminating their reason to poach could eliminate poaching. This idea is exemplified in the QENP as there are multiple reasons locals poach. Administrating a catch all solution to address all poaching can be beneficial to those poaching for profit but may cause harm for others such as traditional or necessity poachers (Moreto & Lemieux, 2015). This may reduce trust and community perceptions of legitimacy impacting cooperation between poachers and law enforcement (Moreto & Lemieux, 2015). A more exhaustive approach is needed to address each brand of poachers. Scheduling ranger patrols to target …show more content…
Excessive poaching can lead to species endangerment or extinction. With the risks known it is important to understand the motivations of poachers. Motivations to poach vary differently among regions but commonalities can be seen. Poachers in the QENP and USA share the motivation of money and greed. Some poachers in the QENP also poach out of necessity or traditional and cultural beliefs (Moreto & Lemieux, 2015). Trophy hunters in Montana hunt for status and to show off or impress others in their social circle (Eliason, 2012). In Maine, the perceived injustice and unfairness from wildlife authority promoted poaching (Filteau, 2012). Poaching is a difficult wildlife crime to tackle specifically because of the variety of motivations. While it is hard to address every motivation with a solution, special cases do appear. One such solution to poaching in Maine is for wildlife enforcement to be fair and to patrol parks often, or in other words, to be seen (Filteau, 2012). The broad anti-poaching policies enforced like trade moratoriums produce ambiguous results but do tend to curb species extinction (Abbot, 2008). A ban on the ivory trade has potential to save the elephant from extinction (Abbot, 2008). In conclusion, the motivations explored can lead to a decline on poaching by addressing the rationale of
