Do your think you could sniff out a criminal that just robbed a bank or someone who has a dangerous weapon on them? Obviously not! Although there is a way to find someone that has robbed a bank or someone who has a dangerous weapon on them, that is what police dogs are for. Police dogs are very important to the police department for many different reasons: they can help detain a suspect, sniff out someone or something that the officers are looking for, and protect their handlers. Police stations should have a K9 officer and dog available to them at all times.
The first reason why police departments should have a dog unit is, they can help detain a suspect. In some cases the K9 unit is called to come because the first responders are having a difficult time detaining the suspect, if the dog is their the suspect is normally more cooperative but in some cases they might run. The police can’t always catch up to them so they send the dog to take him down and they are then able to get cuffs on him. These dogs are specially trained to protect their handlers, they will help their partner in any situation, and at any cost. In Mississippi a police dog saves his partners life, A manhunt is underway Wednesday for the three suspects who beat Hancock County Sheriff's Deputy Todd Frazier and slashed him with a box cutter. The loyal companion jumped out of the police cruiser and ran after the suspect he had his handler, Lucas the K9 go to the suspect and bit him 3 different times until he let his partner go. Lucas saved his partners life that night, he was then rewarded with a metal for his bravery. Lucas saved his handlers life without hesitation. If all police departments had a K9 unit, the officers that were alone on duty would have back up if no one else was there, the dog just might save a life that night
