The Ferguson Police Department was harming not only the citizens it served but also law enforcement agencies everywhere. The norms associated with public safety must be focused on the prevention of crime and the health, safety, and welfare of the public. It is unknown for how long the Ferguson Police Department ingrained the deviant behavior into its officers but regardless, the damage was
There are many views out there that favor militarization of the police and just as many that oppose it. A common reason that shows the positive side of militarization is local police are given the resources where they can handle more types of events solely by themselves, without having to call for outside help from the National Guard. It can take hours and sometimes days for the National Guard to show up when they are called upon to assist a local police force. Another popular pro is police officers are equipped with better firearms and training. Police officers would also have access to bigger, more powerful military style vehicles to use at a moments notice.
The felt injustice is statistically supported, as police reforms across the United States, including Atlanta (“APD policy and practice updates”, 2020), have expanded since 2020 to increase de-escalation training, increase knowledge of implicit bias, and include crisis intervention training, while simultaneously the number of individuals killed by police hit a record-high in 2023 (Campaign Zero, 2024). A clear illustration of this has occurred during the protests and demonstrations against Cop City, as over 40 individuals have been charged with domestic terrorism without bond, 61 individuals have been charged with racketeering (a charge created for mafia members and used against organized crime)(Bruce & Shamsi, 2023), and one individual was shot 13 times and murdered at the hands of police officers while sitting with their legs crossed and hands raised in the air (Remembering Tortuguita,
Why police are killing blacks? Police Brutality. What’s the point of them of killing innocent black people some don't deserve to die over a speeding ticket or just even maybe the way our skin color look. I intend to prove is stop it please!the pros of my argument is some police got sent to jail the cons is that the police killed them they are no longer to live on this earth. I chose this argument because the police killed my twin brother when i was 16 i can't sleep i can't do stuff i normally used to do without him i just miss him so much he meant so much to me now i only have my daddy.
The police force is given a great deal of latitude in performing their duties. Because police officers are expected to confront potentially violent individuals and protect the public, they can legally use physical, and even deadly, force under certain circumstances. A litigator for more than 20 years claimed, “However, an officer who uses force when it is not called for, or who uses more force than is necessary to perform his or her job, may cross the line into police brutality.” (England 1) This is not a legal term, but it may be best described by way of example.
#1 The occupation I researched and interested in is a police officer. The responsibilities of being a cop are high. You have to uphold the law at all times. Also, people look up to you so you have to act right even when you’re off the job.
Police officers are the wardens of our society, they are tasked with a duty that weighs on them like Atlas. The average man cannot not match this burden and even some police officers cannot reach the standards of their fellows. So, what happen when a police office is found to be corrupted? Having his fellow police officers collecting a case against him would make the whole situation bias and the corrupted cop could easily get away; this in peculiar has been a major problem in American police since 1900’s. A new method of dealing with police corruption has been adopted in liberal states like California, Washington, and New York, Civilian oversight.
Such freedoms include the using deadly force, seizing personal property and high-speed driving. Meanwhile, such freedoms might be necessary; they can create an environment for wrongdoing, more especially when such habits are undetected as a result of inadequate supervision. The embarrassment created through the misconduct of law enforcement officers result in damaging the public trust, undermining the morale of law enforcement officers, as well as exposing the police department to unnecessary and costly litigations. Throughout the U.S police department history, law enforcement officers involved in police brutality have acted with the embedded approval of the legal system (Holmes and Brad 9-11). Police brutality has emerged as a considerable moral concern in the police department that needs to be addressed.
Police officer misconduct has been a publicly controversial topic for many years. Many people are familiar with the infamous “Ramparts” division of the LAPD where they committed acts of beatings and extortion and the “Riders” of the Oakland Police Department in their brutality against suspects (Criminal Law, n.d.).These examples are just a few of the problems that have occurred and occurring within our criminal justice system. The examples previously described also provide a connection of one familiar form of police misconduct and that is brutality. Police brutality is just one of the many forms of police misconduct and the types that follow under misconduct include theft/fraud, bribery, sexual misconduct, use of excessive force, domestic
The law enforcement are given the responsibility to uphold the law to protect the public regardless of race, religion or ethnicity. This is guided by the rules of policing that were set down in our Constitution. The United States law was created to establish a fair treatment of our citizens, to protect and ensure their rights of privacy are not violated against federal, state and local agencies (Hess, Orthmann, Cho, 2015) As member of the State Sheriff’s Association, there are some shared concern regarding the issues of our police officers engaging from various number of detailed pattern or practices of unconstitutional and unlawful conduct. Such as, officer involved in shooting, police brutality, allegations of racial profiling and officers’
The ability of the Cambridge police to use mathematics to solve crime in this era is a huge development that needs to be applauded. It goes on to affirm that gone are the days that mathematics is used solely for its field alone since our day to day activities of recent involve the use of one form of mathematics or another. Statistics and probability an aspect of mathematics can be used virtually for everything in our society today law enforcement included. There are numerous benefits that could be derived by using this method of policing used by Cambridge police force. Crime waves can be examined and assets will be deployed to the locations that need it most based on the statistical evidence thereby saving scarce resources of the society.
I agree with the argument on both sides because law enforcement. Yes, denying access to private data to catch a criminal has hindered law enforcement to protect its people from terrorist. There should be an agreement among the tech companies and with the government on a law that establish an approach to getting access to private data. The agency as stated before should have a reason and presented with a warrant to access the data. Tech companies should work alongside law enforcement not against it.
Police officers are held to such high standards, and one way to maintain these standards is to know when to step back from a situation. In the scenario presented, the officer has several possible solutions; however, an officer must make the best possible decision in order to maintain his integrity and standing in the community. It would be unethical and a danger to the public to let him go and drive off. He could be released into someone else’s custody or I could take him home, however this might lead to charges of special treatment.
Sean Bell, Daniel Shaver, Walter Scott, John Crawford, Michael Brown, Ezell Ford, Raupheal Thomas, Tamir Rice, Nicholas Thomas; all these men have something in common: they were unarmed, shot and killed by police. All these officers were let off due to typical excuses such as self-defense, raised suspicion, or probable cause, without a single form of punishment. Law Enforcement, more specifically police officers, should be held accountable and receive reasonable punishment for their misbehavior and wrongdoings. These men and women hold such authority and responsibility that should not be abused whatsoever. These men and women are responsible for the safety and wellbeing of the community they protect and serve.
I do believe that police departments, including police officers, need more training to better themselves and change with the times, but this military program would be a rude awakening to both the force and the community. “Sending a heavily armed team of officers to perform “normal” police work can dangerously escalate situation that needs never have involved violence” (ACLU, 2017.) Having undertrained officers can be just as dangerous as overtrained officers. I completely agree with critics that the program is too extreme and isn’t necessary for community police who face citizens every day compared to military facing enemies in war. Another argument against militarized police is that the military was formed and exist to defeat the enemies
