When parents weigh out the pros and cons of prenatal testing for a disease or defect in their unborn child, they must consider in mind what it would mean to know ahead of time that treatment is needed right away. In most cases screening while pregnant leads to positive outcomes and in very rare cases is the child effected by it. One of the benefits of undergoing genetic screening is that the parents will know possible chromosomal abnormalities. It should include Collection of family history to see of any genetic diseases. It should also include prenatal testing because all women are at risk of having a baby with a chromosomal abnormality. The two types of prenatal testing, the first being screening tests that determine if the baby has an increased risk of having a particular problem. They are not diagnostic and an increased risk result does not mean the baby will definitely be affected. Prenatal screening tests include and ultrasound and many screenings throughout trimesters of the pregnancy. The second type of testing is diagnostic testing that determine if the baby has, or will develop after birth, a genetic condition. They also include an ultrasound, a chorionic villus sampling, and an amniotic fluid test. When doing pre-pregnancy take into consideration of a carrier test for those from specific ethnic groups and also do an assessment of drug and medication use and implications for pregnancy. There should be a life style change when pregnant if you smoke because it can also effect the child and might not show up on a screening test, later showing up and creating problems for the child that was unknown.
