Due to recent event’s, the issue of sanctuary cities and if local governments should have the ability to maintain these statuses. A sanctuary city according to Professor Ellen Boegel of St. John’s University are localities that welcome immigrants that are not legal citizens and promotes them being involved in the community while also not cooperation with federal immigration agencies (Boegel). One recent event that sparked this debate according to Janell Ross in her article was the shooting of Kathryn Steinle by a man who was departed many times and was convicted of many serious crimes (WP). This issue has the potential to affect many people across the country who are considered “illegals” and thus why this issue needs to be resolved some way or another. One big reason for maintaining sanctuary cities according to an article written by the Christian Century is that they help police in communities that are set-up as sanctuary cities fight crime because if illegal immigrants fear being pick up by federal immigration agencies like the immigrate who stopped a car thieve and assisted police in the investigation in Tucson, would not report crimes like this (CC). If crimes are not reported because people feel like they would be targeted based on their immigration status then crimes have a good chance of going up. Another reason supporting this argument is the fact according to Ellen Boegel in her article also states
