Have you ever not wanted to be in the dress code? Many atmospheres like schools should not require students to have a dress code. School dress codes marginalize students’ race, gender, and ethnicity. Dress codes reinforce racist standards of beauty and dress. Most black girls “face unique dress and hair code burdens. For example, some schools ban styles associated with Black girls and women, like hair wraps” (Con 1). Hair wraps are a tradition to most women. A hair wrap can either be associated with a style or to cover up something they don’t want to show. Although most women can be affected by this it mainly goes against blacks because they wear them in public. Marcus Campbell states “if certain females were not a certain body type, if they had more curves or they had certain features that were developed, they were dress coded over another young lady who may not have the same features but were wearing the exact same items. …show more content…
In schools girls are often dress coded for “too short shorts and skirts, too thin tank top strap, leggings, and other clothing that might be a distraction to boys” (Con 2). I feel like if any boy is too immature to get distracted off of girls' clothing it is a personal problem. Just because a boy can’t control his hormones should not affect female clothing. If a boy can wear tight/short shorts showing his print and wife beaters then so can a female. Women and males are not the only ones affected because “Dress codes also frequently exclude people outside of the gender binary and/or force them to adhere to the codes for their sex assigned at birth” (Con 2). If a person has changed their gender then they should be respected. No one wants to be in an unformattable position by wearing something that doesn’t match their gender.
