Solitary Confinement Over the past decades, the practice of solitary confinement has been used throughout the imprisonments used in the United States, and other multiples places in the world. Although the practice has changed over time, from the way it’s called to the way its embraced there has been many controversy whether it should continue to be a punishment for inmates due to the con's outweighing the pro's, and the after affects that it causes towards the prisoners. So what is Solitary Confinement? It’s the practice that's used by isolating prisoner in cells for 22-24 hours a day, with free of no human contact for either short periods of time or up to decades at a time. Solitary was first introduced in 1790 at the Walnut St Jail located in Philadelphia, this practice began because they saw it as another humane alternative towards overcrowded jails, whipping, and public humiliation. Eastern State Penitentiary was the first to open and all solitary prison in 1829 for men that were kept in their cells alone to contemplate their sins, and seek forgiveness from god. Now 44 states and the federal system have supermax prisons which are composed of solitary confinement cells. Solitary confinement can provide prisoners protection, is some cases inmates may need protection from general population because their life’s at risk, these people are consider high risk offenders, child molesters, murders, and ex-gang members. Being in solitary means it’s the chances of being harm or harming others decreases. Another pro towards solitary is that it allows prisoners to continue to serve their sentence away from the negative stuff that occurs being in general
