No one ever said school was easy. It takes quite a bit of hard work and preparation from both the students and teachers. All within a school year there are different homework, assignments, projects, tests, quizzes, presentations and much more to try and fit into an already busy course schedule. To add to that the Education Reform Law of 1993 was introduced to schools, which required that all public school students have to be tested in the subjects of English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science and Technology Engineering. Those set of tests are called Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) and they are meant to measure students performance based on the Massachusetts Curriculum Framework.
Standardized testing not only stresses out students, but it also leads the teachers to go in a dilemma whether to focus on the curriculum or to get students ready for the standardized testing. No one has ever enjoyed taking a test in his or her entire educational history. Similarly Mr. Estrada’s 4th grade class was not every excited about taking standardized test. Each student has his or her own level of learning. As the students were taking the test, I noticed some students were panicking, while others were confused.
Since 2006, overall SAT scores have dropped by 21 points. It is safe to say that the increase in standardized testing has done more bad than good. When standardized testing became more prominent, the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) saw a plateau in reading and math scores. Additionally, the NAEP saw no further closure in the test score gap. The test score gap affects all minorities.
Despite the fact that the standardized tests might have a little relevance, they are very useless to us students. If you care anything about college, then why would you care about standardized testing? College doesn’t see your test scores. How do you expect the school boards to make us students take all these standardized tests they want to give us seriously, when they know that they have no meaning and so do the students. No one likes taking a recreational test anyway.
In fact 70 percent of educators surveyed in 2015 say that tests are not developmentally appropriate. Furthermore many students suffer a great deal of stress because of standardized tests. What’s most shocking is that instead of lower income schools getting better after tests were implemented they have actually gotten worse. School could essentially be taught by robots. At this point most teachers in my district have to teach a curriculum that is developed by the state instead of their own curriculum.
The Standardized test, similar to the STAAR, can be a nightmare for some students. It should not be allowed in Texas due to many reasons such as wasting precious education time, not promoting students to the next grade, causing stress, provoking students to take drugs, and not determining students’ full potential. Standardized tests should not continue because they provide inaccurate feedback about students and destroy their confidence for their future education and life. Although the standardized test shows if the student should get promoted or not, the test lacks showing the full potential of some students because it judges a student based on a few skills. Test taking skills are needed during the four hours, which is drastically longer than most testing periods in high school. Additionally, it helps by giving them experience with deadlines. Not only is there a deadline in the time you have to sign up, but there are also deadlines during the test. Those who try to work around the deadline are given consequences such as having to leave the test center and not having their test scored. Because of all of the requirements, there is a great deal of pressure on students.

Testing has been used since the mid-1800 and is becoming a part of people’s daily lives if it’s a mathematical test or getting your driver’s test. Standardized testing has many benefits, but should the Department of Education put so much emphasis on standardized testing in schools?
For example, there are these Unit packets that are based around FSA material. At the end of each reading unit, these kids are to take these test and they are so hard. Most times, the teachers have to look up the answers because the teachers don’t even know the answers. If the tests are that hard, they shouldn’t even be used. Teachers forget about actually teaching and making sure that the students actually grasps the concepts because they are so worried about making sure the students know enough material to pass the tests.
Students leave school stressed and full of anxiety and its actually making a negative effect on their everyday life. Students get so overwhelmed that harming themselves is in the picture. The state needs to realize that students aren’t giving their 100% and they will never know their actual academic skills. So why give standardized test? Teachers need to focus on the future and teaching them skills they need in their everyday life.
