Stop and Frisk has always been a well talked about subject. There have been many arguments especially in New York City whether or not we should have Stop and Frisk or not. Stop and Frisk is when a police officer stops a pedestrian and can question them and is also allowed to frisk them for any guns or drugs they might have on them. There are many reasons on why pedestrians do not like this program that police officers do. A lot has to do with privacy issues and label theory. Stop and Frisk is not a bad program in my opinion. The reason why I think Major De Blasio didn’t like stop and frisk was because how the police officers used their power to perform them and who they were targeting. According to the article by the New York Times by Bennett Capers called moving beyond stop and frisk, it states that in 2004, the NYPD has stopped over four million people. 84% of those people were either black or Hispanic. (Capers, 2013) also states that for every 100 people who are stopped and frisked, only 6 of them are arrested for minor crimes. He also states that random stops are way more affective because finding a person carrying a gun is one out of a thousand people. Then he argues that there is no correlation between stop and frisk and crime rates. He said that when stop and frisk was decreased by 20%, crime rates should have went up, but it didn’t. The first fact is in Brownsville in Brooklyn New York, 93 out of every 100 residents were stopped and frisked. The next fact is police officers are allowed to frisk you in your buildings. The next fact is there is way more blacks and Hispanics that are stopped than white, asian and Native American. The statistics show that 53% of black people and 33% of Hispanics were stopped compared to white, Asian, and Native Americans 13.3%. (Mathias, 2012). He also states that when Mayor Bloomberg took office, stop and frisk increased by 600%. The next fact is that the NYPD uses more force against blacks than whites. Statistics show that in 2011, 22.5% of blacks and 15.8% of whites had force used on them. The next fact stated that with the increase of stop and frisk, there was a decrease in guns. The next fact is that there is only a small percentage that the stop and frisk was involved in a violent crime. In 2011, the NYPD reported only 10.5% of the stop and frisk was written down as a violent criminal act and was used for the stop. (Mathias, 2012) states that another fact is that some officers do not use reasonable suspicion. They go off a hunch and that is determined as unconstitutional. He also states that the majority of those who are stopped are actually innocent.
