Why did the Framers of the United States ultimately decide to give more power to the Federal Government rather than the state governments? There were many problems and weaknesses with the Articles of Confederation. Some of the weaknesses was that congress did not have the power to tax, couldn’t regulate trade between the states or foreign countries. They had no National court system, the articles could not be amended without the commitment of all 13 colonies. Despite all the problems and weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation there were some good things about it or “strengths”, like it created the first official government of the United States, and the state had no authority to tax or regulate state-to-state trade.
The articles of confederation, shays rebellion, and the U.S. constitution are all related to each other in a certain way. The articles of confederation were approved by the congress then ratified by the states. It was an attempt to unite the new country and form a government. Shays rebellion revealed the article’s weaknesses. It showed that the country had economic difficulties and couldn’t raise an army.
Although the Articles of Confederation served a great purpose and had numerous advantages and strengths, it also contained many weaknesses with some flaws. One of the weaknesses is that this agreement could not enforce laws or have the power to tax the people of the colony. Along with this, the government could also not allow each of he states to continue to follow those laws. The Articles of Confederation were not the ideal set of laws that the founding fathers intended. They had their flaws, but they also contain a few laws that fixed some current problems of the country. The problems that faced the new nation were, the need for unification and preservation of this unification of the states, the rules emplaced on expansion and settlement of western lands, and it set up a economy, that was vital to the country. The framers of the United States constitution decided to give more power to the federal government than the state government, the framers did this because they didn’t want to create a government with tyranny in it, they also did this to create new ideas for the states. The framers did this because they simply didn’t want the government to have complete control over the people, instead the framers wanted to have the people to have a government just not a complete power one. The framers wanted the people to be able to choose what kind of government they had, what kind of leader they had, they wanted to the people to have a choice. Before the U.S. Constitution the United States held what was known as the Articles of Confederation in regard. The articles of confederation were ratified by the continental congress on November 15,1777. This constitution served as the United States first constitution from March 1,1781 until 1789 until the new constitution took effect. The Articles of Confederation were drafted because congress agreed that a strong Government was needed to organize the states because each state had different laws. The Articles of Confederation had many advantages as well as disadvantages though not perfect, the states followed the governing body under these documents, many political and financial challenges threatened the country.
As it applies to the Articles of Confederation there were many weaknesses in the way it went about governing the United States. For one, the loose federation of the states was too weak to act as a foundation to be considered or act as a central government. In addition the state legislatures had too much power and in turn had the ability to influence economic issues of all kinds. This strong legislature is the same one that allowed for mob ruling and actions by debtors. The Articles of confederation were also weak because the required congress to have all 13 colonies in agreement when a new tax was to be passed.
The new America that was settled by the English who fled British tyranny and offered hope and freedom to the settlers sounded amazing. The reality was, however, that the Founding Fathers were not the beacon of a new Democratic Reform. They tried to sell the idea of a government run by the people and this wonderful democracy, but their main agenda was pushing their own ideals and keeping power in the wealthy. Modern day America still reflects this, although major improvements have happened since the late 1700s. Even though they were not as literal in the tyranny as England with monarchs and true classes, they still were a watered-down version of what they wished to escape.
The Articles of the Confederation was the first government constitution that the United States used, and, although there were strength like the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, there were major weaknesses of the Articles of the Confederation like the following: requiring 9 out of the 13 colonial votes from the representatives from different states to pass a law; having no executive and judicial branch; and the federal government being unable to impose tax revenue onto the states. Such flaws would eventually lead to the Constitution and the repeal of the articles, for the Constitution was a measure to fix the problems of the articles with a stronger government that allowed them to impose taxes and and implement new laws for a more effective government.
After the Articles of Confederation failed because they failed to give enough power to the national government and congress, our founding father’s needed to reflect on its flaws for a new system to be set in place. Their new creation, our Constitution, was then set into place, and was created from a basis of the Articles of Confederation. The Articles of Confederation directly influence the Constitution by its failure by changing some of the responsibilities of the federal and state governments. The Articles of Confederation gave too much power to the states, and the Constitution changed that.
The Articles of Confederation was an agreement among the thirteen original states of the United States that served as the first constitution. The Articles had first been introduced by Richard Henry Lee in the Second Continental Congress. Although the Articles of Confederation has made its contributions throughout history, the Articles, however, did not last very long and had been proven inadequate from the very start. The Articles of Confederation were a document seen as the “first” constitution of the United States. This document granted the new national government power to control the military, declare war, and create treaties between the states. However, the Articles had holes in it considering the government did not have the power to tax, create laws without at least nine states’ approval, or change the Articles of Confederation without a unanimous vote. This means that the country soon fell into debt and petty arguments between state, the new government had no control. It was time for a change.
