The criminal Justice system is seen to be as a way of keeping individuals safe from threats and harassment, but is the system causing more threats and harassment that any other individuals? Poor people are being tossed away as if they are garbage when compared to rich individuals. When a poor person commits a minor crime such as jaywalking, trying to find other means to provide for their families they are treated as criminals, but when you see large corporations and banks that have access to large sums of money doing worse crimes such as allowing drug cartels and other horrific organizations a safe means of using U.S dollars they are treated far less severely than if it were a poor person committing a lesser crime, they aren't treated the same …show more content…

Individuals in wall street are taking actions in transactions and activities that would be deemed illegal if committed by the poor at smaller rates. These rich people are committing the same crimes as poorer people who are committing these crimes because they are trying to find a means of being able to get money to provide for their families. However, the rich are committing these crimes at a larger scale and are not held accountable for their actions except for paying fines which they are able to make in less than a year, but the poor individuals are getting jailed for lesser crimes. “Tory Marone was being offered his deal to spend forty days at Rikers Island for half a joint that was all-the-way hidden in his pocket…(Taibbi, 2014 p. 57)”. This man was charged with multiple days in prison for having a half of a joint (not even the whole joint) in his pocket by the police doing a stop-and-frisk on him even though he had not committed any crimes, meanwhile HSBC was merely fined a fraction of its annual income. Brown was dressed up and coming back from work at 1 a.m, he was charged for blocking pedestrians at 1a.m in the morning. This happened multiple times, and a fed up Brown went to court to fight these charges, but was a advised to just add the misdemeanor to his records and pay the fine, which he didn't want to to do, but in the end hise case was dismissed and he still had to pay the fine.
