I believe that the Dakota pipeline should not be built. This controversial issue is much more than just about a pipeline being built to transport oil. It contains environmental, social, political, and cultural conflicts. I am well aware of the economic growth this pipeline can supposedly build. It can creat up to 12,000 construction jobs, make America less depend on the Middle Eastern countries, and could bring $156 million in sales and income taxes to state and local governments. However, the construction workers will lose their jobs once the project is built in a span of a year. Moreover, there is no guarantee the pipeline will be successful. There is guarantee, however, of the environmental and cultural problems that will arise after the completion of the pipeline. There's no more slavery, segregation upon race or residential school’s to whitewash Native American children. We mock the baby boomers for using up so many of our natural resources, to the point of it being gone. We think we’re not like them, that we have stopped trying to find cheaper and faster ways to improve the economy, without considering the problems it will cause the environment. Yet, aren’t we exactly like them or even worse for condoning building the pipeline? The continuation of the pipeline shows us how much America still lacks empathy for its Native American population. They protest for their right to their history, traditions, and clean drinking water, yet we want to deny them that. This could be one of the major events where Americans can prove that we respect the First Nations and what they’ve gone through. We can show that, today, people want to protect our environment by not supporting projects that would definitely harming
