Committing a crime of any offense results in a punishment of some sort. Offenders of a crime such as murder punishment may result in the death penalty. The death penalty is said to provide an effective form of punishment for crimes involving the conviction of one person for the intentional killing of another person. I agree in part and disagree in part. To begin, the punishment that is given to a person after they commit a crime is enforced by the criminal justice system. The criminal justice system inflicts pain on the convicted by taking their property, liberty, and/or life (Dressler 11). The steps they take before punishment include finding out who is accountable for the crime, what punishment to choose, and they make sure the crime fits the punishment. Bias reasoning such as racial and ethnic discrimination can make one falsely convict someone for capital murder. “Over 150 people in the last few years have been taken off death row because they were innocent. I know there are people who want to believe that no innocent person has ever been executed in this country” (Chambers). Chambers also states that prosecutors in the cases used insignificant evidence withholding information is why a lot of those cases resulted in the way that they did. The quality of an attorney plays a big part in the sentencing of the prosecuted. “Almost all defendants in capital cases cannot afford their own attorneys. In many cases, the appointed attorneys are overworked, underpaid, or lacking the trial experience required for death penalty cases” (Death Penalty Information Center). Without a properly trained and experience attorney, defendants have a low chance of winning their case. With all of these facts it makes it hard to determine if those on death row actually belong there, which makes one rethink the death penalty value as a
