Although the Handmaids never saw the Colonies, or met someone who experienced them firsthand, the Colonies were still enough of a threat to force them to become Handmaids. After the Birthing Ceremony, Offred states that Janine will “never be sent to the Colonies, she’ll never be declared an Unwoman. That is her reward” (146). This statement reveals that the Handmaids only agreed to their roles in order to escape the fate they imagined for themselves if they were declared an Unwoman and sent to the Colonies. This is very significant, as their chosen alternative was to spend the rest of their lives in servitude, as second-class citizens slave to the whims of their reproductive system.
