BEST SITCOMS OF THE 21ST CENTURY No, this list won’t contain any of the classic answers that might pop up in your head. I won’t be mentioning The Big Bang Theory or How I Met Your Mother. Instead I’ll be giving you recommendations of TV shows you’ve probably never even heard of before. What is more, none of the shows listed here have a laugh track, because they don’t need it. 1. Community After getting suspended from his law firm because of a fake college degree, Jeff Winger is forced to enroll in a community college. He becomes friends with a group of lovable misfits at Greendale. The show is based on Dan Harmon’s (the creator of Community) real-life experience with a study group at Glendale Community College. It is an adaptation of the BBC series of the same name. The series depicts the everyday lives of office employees at a branch of the fictional Dunder Mifflin Paper Company. Michael Scott is their annoying, offensive but caring regional manager. He is a truly unique character. At the same time, everyone can see a little bit of themselves in him. Jim and Pam are basically “relationship goals”. Halpert’s genius pranks on Dwight are hilarious. The writers do an excellent job of taking something simple as a boring paper company and turn it into a hilarious comedy whilst making you care about the characters in it. 3. Parks and Recreation Parks and Recreation is a mockumentary that centers around a group of government employees in the fictional town of Pawnee. Even though people loving each other isn’t perceived as funny and sitcoms are usually cynical and ironic, Parks and Rec was always filled with sweetness and optimism. Just like The Office, mainly because Parks and Rec was supposed to be a spin-off of The Office, side characters hated their “boss” Leslie Knope at the start. If you ever watch this comedic perfection, don’t forget: there’s always money in the banana stand. 5. 30 Rock 30 Rock is based on the experiences Tina Fey had as head writer of Saturday Night Live. Fey had never written a sitcom pilot before she wrote 30 Rock’s, just as she had never written a movie script before Mean Girls, and we all know how fantastic that film is. She doesn’t only write and produce the show, but stars as fictional NBC late night show “TGS” producer Liz Lemon. I’ll give you an example to the dynamic Lemon had with her mentor and boss Jack Donaghy: Liz: …Because creativity to me is just like… like a… bird, like a friendly bird, that embraces all… ideas, and just like, shoots... out of its eyes, all kinds of beauty. Jack: Wow, Lemon, this is like watching Hemingway write. Mark Hemingway. Contrary to what most TV shows do, there was never a romance between the two lead characters. 30 Rock was always unique, fresh and
