The Pew Research Center, a nonpartisan American “fact tank” that provides information on social issues, public opinion, and demographic trends, recorded in November of 2016 that nearly 77 percent of the US population owns a smartphone (Smith). There are nearly 321.4 million people inhabited in the US, so that means there are about 247.5 million people in the US with a smartphone. Cellphones have become a necessity for life, when it comes to talking to friends, driving places, passing time, and the list can go on forever. It is difficult to put the phone down and leave it alone for a day because it feels like being disconnected from the world and it is always convenient to stay updated. Whenever someone wanted to hang out with a friend, they would physically have to go to their house and ring their doorbell. When communicating with a long distance relative or friend, it would have to be done the old-fashioned way; by writing a letter to them. There were also no Facebook friends, so the only friends you had were the ones you meet in person. Smartphones have made a negative impact on society because of all the social media sites that came along with it. In fact, the Pew Research Center states that in 2015 nearly 93 percent of U.S. teenagers use at least one form of social media, 76 percent used more than one, and 56 percent of teens use the internet several times a day and 24 percent of teens said they used it constantly (Social Media). ProCon.org, the leading source for pros and cons of controversial issues argues on the pro side that, “70% of adult social networking users visit the sites to connect with friends and family, and increased online communication strengthens relationships. 52% of teens using social media report that using the sites has helped their relationships with friends, 88% report that social media helps them stay in touch with friends they cannot see regularly” (Are Social Networking Sites).
