The REAL ID Act was voted on and passed through the United States Congress in 2005, in response to the World Trade Center attack of 2001 (The Unites States Department of Homeland Security, 2017). It has taken a relatively long time for the Real ID Act to be implemented, but as of 2017 all states are required to be incompliance with the act. Some states are not yet in compliance and most of those states have filed an extension. The REAL IS Act is set to standardize enhanced states identification card and driver’s license. The act also has regulations on the documents required to obtain a state identification and driver’s license. Another part of the act establishes that an individual will have to be in possession of a valid enhanced state Identification or driver’s license to enter military bases, nuclear facilities and to board a federally regulated plane (The Department of Homeland Security, 2017). One of the main objectives of the REAL ID Act is to prevent terrorism (Department of Homeland Security, 2017). The act can help reduce terrorism by setting new standards for obtaining an enhanced state identification and driver’s license. First and foremost is the potential for a decrease in domestic terrorist attacks, by regulating access to certain facilities as well as airways. Having an enhanced identification can eventually assist with easier process when entering a government facility or boarding an aircraft. The enhances security features on the new identification cards will make it more difficult to fraudulently reproduce state identifications. Another benefit to having a regulated identification cards is all the identifications will have a more uniform appearance and mandated information contained on the identification
