An exemption for whaling
1. Do you agree with the Norwegian and Japanese position on permitting the hunting of non-endangered species of whales as a cultural exemption?
I don’t personally agree with whaling because in my opinion this type of activity is very cruel for whales, besides, their reproduction cycle is slow and therefore it may lead this animal as an endangered species. However, part of the economic source of some villages of these countries depend on this activity, banning this activity may affect the income for those peoples that depend upon whaling as a livelihood. In another word, the environment is affected by the human’s extraction of raw material but it is not constituted for the men’s law but just the pursuit of profit, regardless the environment impact it leaves behind.
3. How should these kinds of questions about cultural exemptions be settled? Should an international panel (such as a committee at the WTO) be asked to weigh the validity of such claims? Who should serve on such a panel?
This situation should be addressed by NGO’s such as WDC, to encourage and make people aware of the consequences of whaling, once the people are no longer desiring to make profits from this activity, the government of all the countries can make a long-term plan to start to ban whaling and begin to promote some other activities instead, for instance, the agriculture which is also an important activity to sustain all the humans, is still lacking from produce enough food supply for all the world, due to the reasons that developing countries daily suffer from poverty and hunger.
