In her article “Let Kids Sleep Later,” Terra Snyder argues that schools should push back start times to allow for more sleep for students. Snyder cites research that shows that adolescents need 8-10 hours of sleep per night, but many are not getting enough due to early school start times. She also provides examples of schools that have successfully pushed back start times and seen improvements in attendance, academic performance, and overall student health. While some may argue that early start times prepare students for the "real world," Snyder makes a compelling case for why the benefits of later start times outweigh the potential drawbacks.
Students are being woken up in the middle of a deep sleep. Being an alumnus of Melrose High School, I also remember the exhaustion I felt during the week. This can be detrimental to not only the learning but also their health. Sleep deprivation increases risk taking behavior, substance abuse, and impedes judgment and decision making ability. Many districts have taken part in this time shift.

In Pros and Cons of Later School Start Times by Leigh Ann Morgan, the author informs the reader that “...AAA says that drowsiness contributes to more than 100,000 crashes per year.” Starting later would lessen this amount by ensuring that students have more time to sleep, therefore helping to prevent drowsiness. The main purpose of school is to help students grow in their abilities, however, sleep-deprived students may find this impossible to do so. Sleep Deprivation and Teens: ‘Walking Zombies’ by Valerie Strauss notes that “a mere one-hour nightly loss of sleep was equivalent to the loss of two years of cognitive maturation…” Students are not able to learn and function as well as they would be able to when given enough time for sleep.
Students who don’t get the required 8 ½ to 9 ½ hours of sleep each night become more vulnerable to depression and obesity, (according to www.npr.org). This can cause problems later in these students’ lives. Think about this; Why should students have to suffer just because school start times are too early? Would you want that to be your child in the
When kids are tired, their grades are usually worse than other kids. They don’t think straight or they just mess up. It would be better if school just started after 8:30. There are studies that early is better too. But there are more for later being better.
Teen could start school times later to improve their health, and live longer. If schools don’t take action know they will be the cause of why adolescents experience permanent damage. Exhaustion makes you grouchy and depressed. Having a good nights sleep makes you feel refreshed and so much better than not getting enough or any sleep at all. The thought of starting school classes later is a magnificent idea. It gives children more time to sleep and to feel more refreshed when they wake up and head off to school. One of the best things is that students will not be tired in school.
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine asserts that early school days lead to accidents along the roads, depression among the young teenagers, and upsurge in poor performance academically for middle and high school students. Teens struggle through the challenge of waking up very early in the morning so that they can be at school at the right time. Research implies that teens should get at least eight to nine hours of night sleep for their good health. Various sponsors such as the American Academy of Pediatrics and Centers for Disease Control have the strong advice on why schools should start later. Nevertheless, by being able to sleep more before school starts, students will be able to become well rested, more attentive in classroom settings, and perform better as learners.
“Naps in Schools” 85% of mammals are polyphasic sleepers. Meaning that they sleep for short periods of time throughout the day, according to The National Sleep Foundation.org. Humans or Homo-sapiens are apart of this mammal group. Students deserve time in school to take a short nap like 15-30 minutes. In doing this we will improve students mood and learning ability.
" Sleep is very critical and should definitely be taken seriously when making decisions about students and education. Since an entire day is cut off the week, that extra time needs to be made up during the remaining four days. At my school, the class went from 8:15 a.m. until 4:15 p.m. — about an hour or two longer than a typical five-day-week school’s day. An eight-hour day is undesirable for elementary-aged kids. It can rapidly tucker them out. For high school kids, longer school days mean longer school nights.
The topic I will be writing about is why students should be able to sleep in class. I agree with that statement because you may not know what a student is going through at their home. They may have to go home to long tiresome chores. Also after they do their chores they may have to do homework. Another reason I agree with this statement is because a lot of students play sports ,and have afternoon practice.
