rch Action Plan ( Urban Growth and Decline) The aim of the research action plan is to investigate the changing nature of Circular Quay/Darling Harbour through analysing the effects of urban growth and decline on the environment and population of the area. In order to investigate the aim we must first understand the notion of Urban growth and decline. The Pyrmont-Ultimo area has gone through major alterations through time. Pyrmont has gone through many urban process encountering urban renewal twice and decline. The typical dynamics of urban decline is the population decreasing in areas of the city with suburbs becoming abandoned and slums becoming derelict forcing people to move away from urban locations. As the city of Pyrmont was becoming established and developed in the mid 1800s, the Pyrmont area became a manufacturing site. Pyrmont at first was a sustained community as it accommodated for the resources the city area. It supplied a central area for the export business. These improvements provided many employment opportunities in the manufacturing industry. In the beginning the Pyrmont-Ultimo area, was a success, but WWII altered everything. After 1945, manufacturing products in the area no longer became a necessity. During the 1950s, industries started to move into the newly developed Sydney areas leaving the Pyrmont-Ultimo area. In 1984, the state government developed a program that would renew the Pyrmont-Ultimo area taking 4 years to finish. The Pyrmont-Ultimo area now became the central area and a functional community was formed. It is now a effective business , commercial, and residential community. In 1988, the renewal of Darling Harbour area further enabled the area to renew itself . In 1992, with the assistance of the government, the City West Development Corporation was formed. This corporation redeveloped the Pyrmont-Ultimo area by encouraging people to live there. This was achieved by developing more residential and commercial facilities. A total of $1.5 billion was spent in the renewal of the Pyrmont-Ultimo area. Redeveloping the area was a great success and beneficial for everyone. It gave many people in the 'white-collar' industry a job and a new home for many Australians. Urban renewal had a positive impact on the physical environment as the area was no longer experiencing urban decay. The physical environmental had improved
