There are many different models in psychology. Some have many similarities while some seem completely opposite of each other. Two such models are the Behavioral model and the psychodynamic model. While the psychodynamic model is the oldest model to deal with the psyche and many theories have pulled from it, the behavioral model has been well received and many believe it explains abnormal functioning more clearly. In this essay I will look at both the pros and cons of these two models. The behavioral model has become of great use to the clinical field. Many clinicians base their therapy in the behavioral model. It is often combined with cognitive therapy because they go hand in hand. Personal and professional differences forced these men to split off and develop their own theories, although they held on to Freud’s’ belief that human functioning is shaped by dynamic psychological forces. Because of the influence of Freud, their theories are under the umbrella of psychodynamic practices. All psychodynamic theories seek to uncover past traumas and inner conflicts. Recent Psychodynamic approaches have become more client led approaches where the therapists lets the client start the conversation, leading them in a direction that will help them see the issues in their thinking.
