Antisocial personality disorder is difficult to treat and it depends on the case and severity of the patient. There is not currently a drug that has been approved to help treat this disorder, but there are medications to treat symptoms such as depression that are a result from of disorder. Therapy is the most common form of treatment for this disorder, but it is not always effective.
The disorders that Pat shows symptoms of include Bipolar, Schizophrenia, and dissociative identity disorder. In this paper I will discuss examples in the movie where Pat Solitano thinks and acts like he has these disorders. The first disorder I diagnosed Pat with is Bipolar although the movie never states exactly what Pat has this is probably the main disorder the character is supposed to relate with. Bipolar has states of mania, this is when the patient is super positive and is at the peak of the disorder. Pat shows mania within the first 10 minutes of the movie.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a unique, inspirational, and comically heart breaking novel. The person who recommended the book to me said that it changed her in many different ways. It was eye opening to the fact that many people have varying different mental illnesses that can affect the way they interact with people and live their day-to-day lives. In the book the main character Charlie has depression and PTSD. Having these disorders changed the way he interacted with his friends.
(H) Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) affects 14 million Americans at sometime in their lives and left untreated can completely take over your life (NEA, 2013). In J.D Salinger’s masterpiece The Catcher in the Rye the main character Holden Caulfield suffers from this very disorder. (Thesis) The very reason Holden can’t keep or obtain a relationship is because of his Borderline Personality Disorder. (B1) Holden is constantly involved in impulsive and self destructive behavior as a result of BPD which prevents him from gaining and maintaining relationships.
In the last few years, the representation of people suffering from mental illness in popular culture has greatly increased, showing actual teenagers that characters and idols have real problems in everyday life. The characters of many popular movies tend to have various mental and physical illnesses, but they are often romanticized and not portrayed correctly. In Silver Linings Playbook, both of the main characters have a mental illness and they are displayed fairly accurately. However, it is slightly romanticized and leaves the viewer with the impression that everything is okay after a kiss and that together, the main characters will both be much better with their illnesses. Silver Linings Playbook is about a man named Pat Solitano who has just returned from an eight month stint in a mental hospital and has been diagnosed with Bipolar disorder. He was required by law to be treated in the mental hospital because he had previously almost beaten a man to death after discovering he had an affair with his wife, Nikki.
For this report, I chose the movie, Forrest Gump. Throughout the movie, Forrest showed many symptoms for many different disorders. I would now like to touch on a few of these. The first disorder I would diagnose Forrest with would be autism. The number of symptoms Forrest showed for this disorder were greater than those of others.
The presence of it in the main character of a popular film draws attention to the issue, and if anything, increases overall awareness of psychological disorders due to the staggering popularity of movies. The downside is that the way in which these disorders are portrayed in film often exaggerates them, and rarely shows any sort of treatment or resolve for the characters who have the disorders. This popular culture portrayal can make it seem as if there is no way to get help, when there are so many treatments that could benefit the individual. It should be more important to the film directors to include more references to treatment or to consequences should the disorder not go untreated. Additionally, the more realistic the portrayal of the disorder is, the more it can grab people’s attention.
The movie Shutter Island is overwhelmingly filled with themes of mental health. Before moving into the content of this paper I would like to disclose this movie contains a false and melodramatic portrayal of mental illness, this is not an accurate representation of the field. The movie begins with Federal Marshal Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his new partner traveling to a secluded island containing a mental facility for the criminally insane. They are supposedly there to investigate a missing patient, however, throughout the movie we see clips with signs and symptoms that point to Teddy’s own diagnosis of a mental disorder. That maybe Teddy isn’t exactly on the island for an investigation but has his own hidden secrets to uncover.
