Chris Molina Professor Jacquelyn Fargano PSY-2-36018 7 November 2014 Psychology as a Broad Discipline Many people associate psychology with people who have a mental disorder or psychiatrists; those people do not know that the science of psychology is so much more than that. There are numerous different perspectives in psychology; not all perspectives of psychology are in agreement with another. Each perspective has a different view on behavior, and how the brain works. Although most psychologists today define psychology as the scientific study of behavior and mental processes, there are different perspectives for them. The man responsible for founding the psychodynamic perspective is Sigmund Freud. Freud developed theories of personality, and developed theories for treating mental disorders through psychoanalysis. Freud’s psychoanalysis involved him letting his patient think freely and aloud, so he could analyze their thoughts to explain their everyday behavior. Psychoanalysis is the type of therapy most common in film, where the psychologist sits and listens to the patient, which is why it is commonly associated with psychology as a whole. Another perspective that is commonly associated with psychology by the media is the humanistic perspective. Two men pioneered the humanistic perspective, Abraham Maslow and Carl Rogers. Maslow would ask people what made them “good”, instead of focusing on only the bad things that happened in one’s life. Rogers developed an approach to therapy that focused on the “clients”. He used clients instead of “patients” to make them think that they were on the same level of worth as him.
