The Troubles of War That Cause CPTSD For Tayo Within Ceremony

Within Ceremony there was a struggle for most soldiers after World War II (WWII) in the novel by Leslie Marmon Silko, soldiers returned home with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders (PTSD). PTSD is a form most have trouble understanding even in history, some scientist were not sure of the condition until a lot more of War Veterans had their own signs of such disorder. Though there are some cases of PTSD that are considered Complex-PTSD. My main focus is Tayo after the war and his form of CPTSD which deals with short and long-term effects found in Ceremony.

Tayo began to melt down in a panic because he couldn't pull the trigger and kill his enemies. Tayo thought that a Japanese was his Uncle Josiah. Though Tayo wasn't in the right mind at the moment but it seemed so clear to him that Josiah was a dead man lying before him. In the novel “Ceremony” it stated, “So Tayo stood there, stiff with nausea, while they fired at the soldiers, and he watched his uncle fall, and knew it was Josiah… Rocky made him look at the corpse and said, ‘Tayo, this is a Jap’ This is a Jap uniform!’ And then he rolled the body over with his boot and said, ‘Look, Tayo, look at the face,’ and that's when Tayo started screaming because it wasn't a Jap, it was Josiah.. Glazed over by death.”On the contrary, Josiah was not there dead lying before tayo it was a figment of his imagination because it was indeed as Jap. I believe this is very important because it shows exactly how war affects people and their minds. The way Tayo is having flash basks and responding to them is showing that he may very well have Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The storytelling put out awareness of PTSD, how someone receives, and the short and long term effects of traumatic experiences. Tayo tries to rehabilitate himself to better himself but that’s besides the point, most soldiers don’t and that tires into long term effects and Tayos only long term effects should consist of memories from the war but no meltdowns; if the healing process with Night Swan truly mends Tayo’s mind for the novels to
