Public Health Personal Statement

Within Public Health, I have always been passionate about how we can enact change on a larger scale and strive to further my education to understand these health disparities and be able to implement equity-based regulations and public health policies to provide care to the most susceptible populations. I immigrated from Pakistan to Oregon with my family when I was 15. Before moving, Public Health was the polio prevention medicine every two months from the public health officials that would be at our door. I was not familiar with the US healthcare system, until a healthcare worker at the local county signed my siblings and me up for the Children Health Insurance Program (CHIP) in Oregon. I believe my personal and work experiences have prepared me to take on an advocacy role and work in health policy to create a more inclusive and equitable system that addresses these accessibility gaps that are affecting many populations today. As an immigrant, I have the motivation and drive to apply and undergo an intense Health Policy and Law curriculum and aim to create social change within the healthcare system. Through the Public Health School at Boston University, I hope to obtain advanced knowledge on health systems reform, focusing on health equity, economics, law, and policy and how we can collaborate with various sectors of service to address the social determinants of health. One of my goals is to get involved in the Research center and address the health inequities in the healthcare system. I especially would like to focus on researching ways to improve the system with policy interventions. Specifically, the use of languages when delivering information to especially the refugee and immigrant population looks like and while addressing the healthcare gaps. With a well-rounded curriculum and research facilities, the Boston University Public Health program will provide me with the best evidence based knowledge and active field learning that meets my educational
