Films have been a mode of expression since its creation in the 1890s. Some movies definitely have deeper meanings than others, such as Pulp Fiction compared to This Is The End. Despite the seriousness of the subject matter, movies are a form of expression for everyone involved: the writers, directors, producers, actors, and even the viewers. When someone writes anything, it is a reflection on something that they have been thinking about and they feel as though they need to share it. It gives the viewers insight into a dangerous world which we could unfortunately be moving towards. Although there are usually deeper themes being explored in movies, it is still entertainment and the people involved want it to make money. By including entertaining elements, such as the romantic relationship between Vincent and Irene in Gattaca, the true message of the movie is not very explicit. Dramatic subplots are essential to a financially successful movie, though, which is unfortunate because viewers can easily become distracted by the trivial details and completely disregard the important message the movie is trying to make. The technology that is used in the film to genetically modify embryos and to identify people is currently not yet a reality, but it is being developed through science like CRISPR. This film is meant to reflect a possible reality for us in the future and how it would affect everyone. By creating a society that values genetically superior people over those who were naturally born, huge amounts of pressure are put on both naturally born children and children who are genetically superior. The genetically superior children have to live up to high expectations, while the naturally born have very low expectations for them. They are limited in the amount of jobs they do, despite the fact that people like Vincent are completely capable of doing the same job as someone whose genetics are more pristine. Since this technology is not too far away, this film acts as a warning for the extremities that technology can cause, and it encourages the audience to consider the current discriminations we face today. People are discriminated against today because of their race, gender, socioeconomic class, ethnicity, and sexual identity. This movie shows how we as people continue to determine others’ success based upon things that make them different, or things that do not make them perfect, and I
