The Punic wars Each of the three deadly Punic Wars between Carthage and Rome lasted many years. The first war lasting about twenty-three years. The second war lasted about seventeen years. The third war lasted about three years. Why did these wars happen? Who fought in the wars? Who won the Punic Wars? Why were there only three? Did the series of conflicts between the two ancient lands ever become resolved? The First Punic War was caused over Carthage and Rome both wanting control over Sicily, and they were not willing to share it. This war was around 264 BC. The location of this war was in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, Sardinia, and the Mediterranean Sea. The Romans victory lead to them owning Sicily. Carthage and Rome still had competition after the war. As a result of competition, Carthage and Rome later had a Second Punic War. The Second Punic War was around 218 BC. Carthage was under Hannibal’s command and the Romans wanted Hannibal. Carthage refused to give him to them. Hannibal lead Carthage to Rome for war. The war was fought in Gaul, Hispania, Greece, Italia, Sicily, Sardinia, and North Africa. Earlier before this war Carthage decided to declare war on a neighboring province. Rome was angry that they had broke the treaty. Carthage was week. If Carthage had decided to ever fight Rome again they would lose the battle completely. The Romans decided to just go ahead and wipe out Carthage since they had nothing anyway. The Romans broke the peace treaty, just like Carthage, and sent Roman solders to North Africa to fight and light fire! Carthage, by the year, would get more powerful. Rome did not want that.
