Besides the use of positive reinforcements, Bent was not properly punishing the employees who took advantage of the Engstrom Company, whether they were stealing merchandises or abusing company time. The overall purpose of a punishment is to encourage and enforce proper behavior within a workplace. Punishment is used to decrease unpleasant behavior through a system of negative consequences or through the removal of something the person enjoys (Newstrom, 2015, pg. 128).
