The puritans came to New England so they could experience and practice christianity in a new form.[background] Puritans believed every word in the bible was the word of god. That said, the bible mentions Devils and witches. They believed a witch was a person who was controlled by the devil. For example, The devil can make a young girl cry in church. One way the court accepted evidence the suspect in question was a witch was when a woman confused the words when saying the lord's prayer.[background] Because of these actions more people were being accused of being a witch.
The Puritans sought to create a society that was more pure and righteous than the corrupt society they believed existed in England. The Massachusetts colonies were founded by Puritan separatists who left England in search of religious freedom. They believed that the Church of England was too hierarchical and corrupt, and they wanted to establish a society that was more focused on individual piety and a direct relationship with God. The Puritans emphasized education and literacy, and they believed that all members of the community should be able to read and interpret the Bible for themselves.

In the year of 1630, a group of people known as the Puritans arrived to America and settled in the Massachusetts Bay Colony in Boston. The Puritans were similar to the Pilgrims in which they were Protestants from England who thought that their reforms of their church were “too Catholic” and needed to be changed further. The Puritans being unhappy with their reforms was the primary reason for leaving England and settling in America, while the Pilgrims stayed behind and were determined to change their reforms. When they came to America, they decided to keep some of their strict rules. For example, church was mandatory and if someone missed a day,
Puritanism was a religious reform movement that wished to purify the Church of England of the remnants of the Roman Catholic faith. The Puritans were persecuted by many denominations across Europe and around 1620, King James I, a member of the Church of England, began oppressing the Puritan community as well. This led the Puritans to flee England and come to the New World where in the words of John Winthrop they were to build a “city upon a hill”. The Puritans settled in the Massachusetts Bay Colonies, more specifically just north of Boston. The most prominent members of this time were John Winthrop.
The Puritans in Massachusetts were very intolerant of other religious beliefs, regardless of the fact that they had been persecuted in England for what they believed. Puritans insisted that regular church attendance was mandatory in order to receive voting privileges. This meant that in order to have a say in anything you had to be a devout Puritan. They often argued about discrepancies within their own religion, such as whether or not sainthood was passed down from generation to generation. Puritans even went as far as to exile other Puritans the did not conform to the standard version of Puritanism.
The Puritans were one branch of people who chose that the Church of England was beyond them. Most of the Puritans settled in New England. They also moved and created separated colonies, the numbers had risen from 17,800 in 1640 to 106,000 in 1700. The spiritual beliefs that they had were very strong.
They came in many ships and outnumbered the pilgrims. The puritans have more of a coherent understanding of the relationship between the church and the state and they give importance to education and religion. As opposed the pilgrims who wanted to completely start over and remake the church the puritans chose to repair what was already established. They wanted to purify the church from the inside out. Therefor they became known as the puritans.
Puritans and Pilgrims were members of the Church of England who in the 16th century began to protest against what they perceived as serious abuses by religious authorities. Both groups are part of Puritanism, an activist movement after the English Reformation which wanted to purify the Church of England by eradicating both corruption and remaining traces of Catholicism. Each group looked to Scriptures as their authority on religion. Although, the Puritans and the Pilgrims shared a common history, and beliefs there are differences that separated them, such as why they left England, their aspirations of the New World and how they governed their colonies.
The Puritans were the founder of the northern colonies of New England although, not all New England Colonists were Puritans. The Puritan religion was an influence in the seventeenth-century. Then there were Quakers, who believed that neither preachers nor bibles were necessary to worship god. Which was the complete opposite of what puritans believed. There is one major difference between the two.

They believed that the Church’s doctrine was incorrect and didn’t follow God’s intentions. This led John Winthrop ( a Puritan leader) to migrate a large quantity of Puritans to America during the 1600’s. Before they moved to America the Puritans were persecuted and weren't able to practice their beliefs in peace.
The Puritan religion was comparable to the Pilgrim's religion. Both were English protestants who felt that England's reforms should have lasted longer. In contrast to the Pilgrims, the Puritans arrived in America in 1630 with the goal of reforming the Church of England. Many people believed that the Puritans were a religious government known as a theocracy. Although some other historians believed that it was a democracy.

Puritanism had an early start due to strong main beliefs that, when challenged, caused major conflict like the Salem Witch Trials. Puritanism had an extremely rocky beginning, starting with a separation from the Roman Catholic Church. Starting in 1606, a group of villagers in Scrooby, England left the church of England and formed a congregation called the Separatist Church, and the members were called The puritans (“Pilgrims”).
