Refugee Education Ministry
Often times, the stereotype regarding global outreach is that it is all about leaving the country, going on mission trips to impoverished nations, and feeding starving children. However, I want to emphasize more than just a worldwide impact, but also the impact that global outreach can have while serving locally. Phoenix is such a melting pot of different cultures and backgrounds as there are many large global populations that have moved to this city. For example, there is an increasing population of refugees from East Africa and Sudan that have moved to Phoenix (Vissicaro n.p.). In Mark 16:15, Peter describes how Jesus has command his followers to “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.” This doesn’t necessarily have to be taken only in a literal sense, but can start right here in the heart of Phoenix. Grand Canyon University is making huge impacts on the community through both local outreach and global outreach opportunities. Another journal article stated that, “the importance of English language acquisition for resettlement of refugees is well established, particularly as a pathway to education, employment, health and social connections” (Riggs, n.p.). There is a direct need for better education for the refugee families. So, this new ministry seeks to help serve their needs by providing English classes and tutoring. Overall, the hope for the ministry is that they will come to grow in relationship with God. Sharing the gospel through the curriculum will hopefully impact their lives. Having the volunteers being able to share Christ’s love unconditional and living out the gospel will also have an impact in this ministry.
