Pursuing A Degree In Special Education

My professional goal is to become a special education teacher. I am currently an undergraduate enrolled at Dakota County Technical College in the Early Childhood Program. I will begin with obtaining my Child Development Applied Associate in Science degree, and intend on working in a child development center. Then I intend on transferring to a four- year university to purse my goal of obtaining my Special Education degree. My vision is to build a positive classroom for students with various disabilities. I volunteer in a special education classroom working with students with Autism, Developmental Disabilities, and Severe Multiple Impairments. My disability impacted me by making learning challenging. Because of my disability, I feel I relate to students and families; I am able to understand the uniqueness of students and that students may need more time and support. Through my own educational experiences in different special education settings, I saw how staff took the extra time to help students in need. I saw students change and grow because of their teachers. I have been able to learn about my disability. I have also learned how I can help others with the same disability.
I developed my teaching philosophy by watching and learning from my many great teachers. I believe that great teacher respect all of their students. Great teachers are able to create a sense of community and belonging in the community. I believe that great teachers are skilled learners who can focus on teamwork and can build a community. I also believe a great teacher is able to maintain professionalism. I believe that every parent should be involved in their children’s education.
