Seventeen years ago, if someone had told me that I would one day pursue a graduate degree in Digital Media Design for Learning, I would have laughed. As a child, while growing up in Saudi Arabia, I was never interested in school. I thought it was the most boring place that I could be. I received average or below average grades, and math was something that I could never understand. Since society defined me by my grades, I never felt that I was smart enough to succeed. It wasn't until my second year of college, when I switched my major to Childhood Studies, that I realized learning could be interesting when the subject matter appealed to me. Modern technology has the power to change the traditional learning environment in ways that can create joyful experiences for students. Breakthroughs in education technology have provided alternative effective learning styles and techniques. Today's children are no longer relying on their textbooks to learn. I want to use these innovations to create learning procedures that will stimulate children who have difficulty focusing in a traditional classroom. This will be true even in a community like the one where I grew up, which remains unaware of the advantages of using technology for training. When I first came to the United States from Saudi Arabia, my goal was to learn Visual Design, so I can design media for children. As I advanced through school and started my professional career, I saw an increased use of e-learning in the United States for corporate training and adult learning. There is an enormous gap between the United States and Saudi Arabia in this area, in large part because Saudi Arabia lacks experts in the field of e-learning design. With internet usage growing in Saudi Arabia, I want to change the way information is taught, specifically beyond basic education.
