Adaptive Cooking Experience with Boise Parks and Recreation My intent of this essay is to highlight my experiences participating in the Boise Parks and Recreation class “Adaptive Cooking”. The essay is divided into four sections. The first section covers current problems experienced with the group, focusing on the demographics of the group, and how the “Adaptive Cooking” program assists or hinders individuals. Secondly, how does the Adaptive Cooking program benefit people with disabilities? What are the effects of these decisions and do they have a positive or negative effect on the individuals participating in the program? The goal of the program “Boise Parks and Recreation Adaptive Recreation program provides a wide range of recreational, social and educational programs for youth and adults with disabilities”. Individuals with disabilities benefit greatly from participating in this program by learning and practicing social skills with individual and instructors. But they also participate in a recreational activity, relaxing in a new environment, sharing food with friends, and peers. The main part of the educational program is to teach food preparation and cooking skills. The importance of teaching highly relevant skills is “that need of these skills for independent living or for constructive/satisfactory occupational and work engagement have been provided for supporting their establishment” (Lancioni, 2002, …show more content…

The Boise Parks and Recreation program offers a chance for individuals with disabilities to practice daily living or life skills in a controlled environment, and to interact with instructors and other individuals both with and without disabilities. But is hard to show the impacts of the skills that are taught at Boise Parks and Recreations Adaptive learning program or any program that offers skills like these. The relation of the life skills taught and success sometimes hard to define, but was clarified by Cronin, “The essence of life skills acquisition cannot be weighed in terms of degrees, diplomas, or other documents; rather, it is demonstrated in their level of independent living, community adjustment, and enhanced quality of life” (Alwell, 2009, 91) Personal impacts of the program can serve to empower people with disabilities. Many times we as a society focus on the negative aspects and limiting individuals in reaching their full potential.
