Regional Elections The concept of democratic elections remains the same internationally, nationally, and regionally, however the means to collect qualitative data can vary. Regional elections are viewed as a subordinate process compared to national elections, however, their impact for their area remains just as significant (Jeffery & Hough, 2003). The voting behavior is immensely different regionally as certain areas have values engraved in a respective area (Jeffery & Hough, 2003). In comparison to larger scale elections regional values may be dissolved in the greater span on the state or nation view. Qualitative techniques retain value in regions, however the small region does not represent the large population to credibly identify national trends. In elections, this is critical as certain geographic locations within a region are explored by candidates (Traugott, 2014). For instance, the national presidential election of 2012 focused 96 percent of advertising funds on only 10 states (Traugott, 2014). This concept explains the intense focus necessary for a candidate to obtain votes. The qualitative research process has advanced from traditional interviews to interaction on social media application. Some smartphone applications can provide researchers real time data during candidate debates from a large population (Traugott, 2014). Polling is derived from data that determines which candidate leads in a certain area. Polling does not always explain why, but qualitative techniques will certainly explain motivations and feelings toward certain topics and policies.
