There are, undeniably, good and bad relationships. The strength of a relationship can be viewed almost immediately. You can see the respect or lack thereof between the parties. The question remains: What qualities make a good relationship, platonic, romantic, or otherwise? The qualities that make a good relationship are trust, respect, and mutuality. A good relationship should be a trusting relationship. Both individuals should be able to have faith in one another. They should both believe the other party’s words because of the other parties actions. Essentially, the trust should have its basis in actuality and behavior, not naivete. I think that a very good example of a mutual relationship is my mother and father. There is a definite give and take. They are both loyal, respectful, and honest. Both parties benefit, and each is the other’s best friend. My mother will make sacrifices for my father and in return, my father will make sacrifices for my mother. I have also seen bad relationships, and I’ll assemble the qualities from multiple bad relationships that I’ve seen into a hypothetical couple. Let’s call them Jared and Cecelia. Jared is constantly trying to control Cecelia He tells her that she cannot hang out with certain people or go certain places. He also tells her that she should cut off her relationship with her family if she wants him to stay with her. He is constantly putting her down. When they are with other people, he makes comments about her stupidity or her ‘air-headedness.’ Cecelia has asked him to stop treating her like this multiple times, but he continues to do so. Obviously, this relationship is bad because it lacks mutuality. Jared is extremely controlling of Cecelia and he is extremely disrespectful toward her. If we analyze the two relationships, we can see that almost all the qualities of Jared and Cecilia 's relationship directly contrasts those of my mother and father’s.
