The following composition is a translation of various quatrains composed by the late Tang poet Du Mu. The poet, himself, predominantly known for his lyrical and romantic quatrains, of the five and seven syllable-per line variants, The three selected quatrains, originating in the ninth century, during the late Tang dynasty, are each composed with a fixed, seven syllable metre, each individual character corresponding to a single syllable. This syllabic structure would then seem inherently incompatible with English verse, which operates on a stress-timed system. The first work, entitled 清 明 (qīng míng), concerns the centuries old tradition of the Qingming Festival, a Chinese celebration dedicated to honoring departed ancestors and family members.
