Years before we started our constitution with “we the people…;” years before we distinguished society to be separated into colors -- black, white or somewhere in between; years before we pledged together to be “...one nation under god, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all…,” we lived under the British rule. However, with the sacrifices of many men who made history come to life, we gained our freedom. Soon our America turned into my America -- my as in the “white” America. The cultural movement known as the Harlem Renaissance approached later on in the early twentieth century, where vibrancies of new perceptions emerged in the minds of many African Americans. However, this white America proved to be an obstacle, taking away the freedom and excitement that the African Americans felt after years of oppression.
However, that wasn’t the case; they were free, but even in Canada, they experienced discrimination and were not given the same rights. Some colonists feared Black settlers, calling them ignorant, immoral, criminal, and a threat to their economy. African Canadians were used as sources of cheap labour, meaning they were paid lower wages by industrialists and worked longer hours, and their children were required to attend segregated schools for Black children, instead of attending with others. Before the second world war, they could not contribute to politics, education, or any form of public services and had very little economic power. Government officials spread information that prevented black immigrants to come to Canada in 1905 to 1911 when Black farmers came to Upper Canada from the United States.
America was no longer a society with slaves, but especially in areas of the deep south, had become a slave society. Paternalistic value embedded in the deep south slave society culture was arguably the cherry on the cake of an unattainable compromise. Americans referred to the abolition of slavery as unconstitutional, necessary to life and permanent. This thought is expanded upon by David Wilmot as he argues, “I ask not that slavery be abolished. I demand that this Government preserve the integrity of free territory against the aggressions of slavery against its wrongful usurpations”

In the address of Susan B. Anthony and the “Freedom or Death” of Emmeline Pankhurst both people are speaking about the right for women to be able to vote. In the speech from Susan B. Anthony uses allusion to evaluate reasons why women should be allowed to vote, while Emmeline Pankhurst uses both allusion and metaphors to imply the right for women to be able to vote. In Susan B. Anthony’s address, she uses allusion to give effective reasoning on why women should be allowed to vote. She does this by using allusion to reference the founding fathers and the three unalienable rights given to all people upon birth.

African Americans had suffered a lot of persecution in the 19th century. They had endured many years of slavery and finally achieved the end of slavery in the end of 1865. Even though slavery ended, the persecution did not. Many people formed groups such as the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) to bring up the idea of white supremacy. White supremacy had quickly spread in the south again, which was where the majority of African Americans lived.

I had difficulties reading Elizabeth’s story and thought it was very brave of her to share her experiences with rape and being taken advantage of. I also admired Lorena’s story and perseverance in wanting to become a doctor. It had previously existed throughout history, in many times and in most places.” Enslaved blacks have been resilient people; despite the various efforts such as slave laws taken to restrain them, they resisted slavery through the rebellion of non-violent schemes towards their Slave masters. An Enslaved black would often be referred to as a human being who was made to be a slave either through birth, contract or trade for purposes such as planation or domestic drudgery.
On February 19th, 1942, former President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066. From 1942-1946, Japanese-Americans, whether they were born in the United States of America or not, were sent to internment camps in the Southwest regions of the United States. Reportedly, the order was issued to keep the Japanese-Americans safe from rising biases and violence against the group, but many believe it was to quell the mass paranoia surrounding Japanese-Americans being spies for Imperial Japan.
