Throughout history there have been many Queens. All over the world, many monarchies had an influence on their people. Such was the same during the 19th century in Hawaii. Before the United States took over, was Queen Liliuokalani. Queen Liliuokalani may be called a hero if we define the term as a person who, endowed with extraordinary qualities of heart and mind, determined to achieve a near impossible goal to restore monarchy powers and succeeds in the face of serious opposition against the United States. Queen Liliuokalani was born on September 2nd, 1838 in Honolulu. Her original name was Lydia Kamakaeha. She was a member of a high-ranking Hawaiian family. She was determined to succeed ruling over Hawaii. Her heart was always set to her kingdom, by putting them before herself. Before she officially became queen, in 1887, ”an elite class of business owners (mainly white) forced Kalakaua to sign the so-called “Bayonet Constitution,” which limited the power of the monarchy in Hawaii.” (History.com) This would lead to her in the future defending her kingdom as she opposed this proposition that would harm her kingdom. One of her first acts was to implement a new constitution that would restore the powers lost to the monarchy through the Bayonet Constitution. But her next opposition would set the future for Hawaii. A coup was set in order to overthrow the queen in 1893. This coup was lead by, “a group of American and European businessmen, with the support of U.S. Minister John Stevens and a contingent of U.S. Marines” (history.com) Again the queen faced adversity from her those that opposed her. But what would result ended up helping her distinguish herself as a hero. She wanted to protect her kingdom by wanting spare her people a bloody conflict. To do this, Liliuokalani stepped down as queen but appealed to President Grover Cleveland to restore her to power.
