A Look Into Respecting the Dead William Faulkner, the 1949 winner of the Nobel Prize, is well-known for his successful literary works, especially for one in particular: As I Lay Dying. In “As I Lay Dying,” the central character of the book, Addie Bundren, passes away and she wishes to be buried in Jefferson, an extremely hard-to-reach town. In order to respect Addie’s wishes and keep their word, her family must go to great lengths to get her to Jefferson. Along the way her family faces many obstacles such as, a broken bridge, the loss of their mules, and a variety of different people who don’t particularly enjoy the Bundren’s company. After nine days of strife and struggles, Addie’s family finally reaches Jefferson and lays Addie to rest.
The word dead generally means that a person is no longer living ,but another meaning is that one is deprived of life. The dead family is deprived of life because they are unlucky to experience the joys of happiness. You are truly unhappy if money is the only thing you care for. The names of many characters signify their personality, and many of the various things that they will do.
Another example of usage of symbolism in this book would be Alcohol. Alcohol is used as a symbol to convey a deeper meaning. Alcohol in this novel symbolizes that many of the characters face problems and obstacles that are very difficult, but they don’t really face them head-on. They try to escape from their problems in many ways, and the main one is alcohol. The characters are having tough times in their lives, where they really don’t know what to do and how to handle their obstacles or setbacks to be happy.

Even though there are features such as irony used in the story, the main literary features used by the author are symbolism, imagery and descriptive writing. First of all, there are huge amounts of symbolism used in the story where the major one would be the Red Death. Not only does the red death symbolize death itself but it also symbolizes how unavoidable it is.
Imagine a little girl trudging through the snow, walking alongside her grieving mother. As she looks away from her feet she glances at her little brother’s corpse lying on the snow lifelessly.
