I would describe the status of queer representation today to be almost explosive. In recent years queer representation in movies and television has become much more prevalent, with many movies choosing to focus on queer relationships as just another love story or losing the love story plot entirely. To me both the story and the characters of Desert Hearts was much more likeable. I found the plot of My Beautiful Laundrette difficult to follow at times, due to its many factions. The story was made up at least four different subplots mashed together. Omar and Johnny. His uncle and his mistress. Omar and Tania. Omar and his father, Papa ( I didn’t realize that he was Omar’s father until almost the end of the film). For me Desert Hearts, was much more comprehensible, due to how the storyline connected. Both films focused on love and romance, but to me the relationship in Desert Hearts was better portrayed. Of course, with age both films can see dated to the viewer. However I believe that My Beautiful Laundrette, iis the more dated of the two. First of all, the concept is renovating a laundromat in order to make a large profit, is not plausible in today's time. Many people have access to a washer and dryer in their homes, decreasing the use of laundromats. The protray of Johnny’s old crew was also dated in my opinion. They are viewed as the right wing punks of the 80’s, not an uncommon group during the time. Today the punk subculture has changed and is not a prevalent in society. Even though Desert Hearts is set in 1959 sixteen years before My Beautiful Laundrette, many of the story’s aspects such as the rural town setting and their relationship aspects stands throughout
