My point of debate is the noteworthy propensity of LGBT communities to be more stable and prominent in suburban and rural communes, than in the large cities in the US. As advocated by post-structuralist feminist and queer theory, the reasons for such differences are numerous and intricate, including income, race, lifestyle, household structure, etc. LGBT communities have successfully established themselves in the suburbia and will continue to assert their political advocacy in the urban realm if more communities relocate to suburbs and beyond. Consequently, these regions are slowly turning into “gayborhoods”.
The status of homosexuals in America during the 1960s underwent a monumental change in the span of a decade, as a topic rarely discussed in the mainstream due to its status as a taboo in American society, deemed sinful and "aberrant", stretching all the way back from America 's puritanical root. In reality, the major victories homosexuals gained were not vast and opportunities for homosexuals were limited by discrimination without federal protection, yet was unique in the way this liberation movement sought to bring homosexuality to the public attention as normal, not as a deviant or "sinful" way of life, and permitted homosexuals, as a group, to express their homosexuality openly as a form of protest. This liberation movement for homosexuality would arise near the end of the 1960s as a surprise
“Masculinity as Homophobia” an article by S. Kimmel, that talks about how men these days have the fear of being judged and ranked based on their manhood. There are some arguments that the Professor mentions and uses in his article that supports his argument and some experiences from other people 's perspective in life of men over the years. The author’s main argument is about how men these days are being watched and judged closely based on how they walk, talk, eat, dress, move and look like. The author explains how the world is judging men and how it tries to take that power and that pride of being a man.
The gay topic in hip hop is not trying to destroy hip hop. Cashun is a gay rapper, who challenged the homophobia with enough dignity. “Disidentification resists an unproductive turn toward good dog/bad dog criticism and instead leads to an identification that is both meditated and immediate, a disidentification that enables politics.” Black gay folks who are in the middle of different dominances find the practice of disidentificacion more seductive and enabling than major subjects. Black queer subjects in black, presumed heterosexual or gay (mostly whites) contexts find that an identification with larger groups is more a liberatory exit for survival than those people who identify themselves with dominant ideologies.
Once, a long time ago, we used the word gay to say how someone or something is bright or happy. Can you imagine someone today saying, “Those flowers look very gay” or “I had such a fun day today, I feel gay?” No, because we now use the term “gay” to refer to a male homosexual person. After many years gay changed its meaning throughout time, but its meaning is constantly changing. People now use gay as an insult or to point something out as different or the outcast, but back in the day it meant being carefree and bright.
Marxism is defined by the Merriam Webster dictionary as ‘’the political, economic, and social theories of Karl Marx including the belief that the struggle between social classes
Marxism is the idea of social science that studies how economic activity affects and is shaped by social processes. Social processes are the way individuals and groups interact, adjust and reject and start relationships based on behavior which is modified through social interactions. Overall marxism analyzes how societies progress and how and society ceases to progress, or regress because of their local or regional economy , or global economy. In this case, Marxism’s theory applies to the novel, Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley, where a society where mass satisfaction is the instrument utilized by places of power known as the Alphas in order to control the oppressed by keeping the Epsilons numb, at the cost of their opportunity to choose their own way of life. Marx thinks that an individual had a specific job to do in order to contribute to their community and that is the only way to do so; There is no escaping your contribution either.
Holland Arrowsmith explains Marxism as a term which refers to “a hugely diverse set of social, economic, philosophical, historical and cultural theories”. Several theories such as social, economical, political and critical theories have been derived from Marxism philosophy. Marxism advocates equality amongst the class structure of society. Marxism is divided into two fundamental classes. According to Marx there are only two classes which exist: Bourgeoisie, which means powerful or dominant class and Proletariat, which means the peasant or working classes.
Understanding gender and sexuality as socially constructed categories is important because it helps people understand a certain group. Gender and sexuality is expressed in many categories and people must be careful not to mix people in the wrong category. Simply because one expresses their sexuality different from another person does not mean they should be bashed or treated differently. Sometimes it does not matter what you identify as, who you identify with, people will always judge you, so its best people just do what they want. Putting gender in a category helps others not stereotype them as something they are not.
"Ideology and Ideological State Apparatuses " Or “Theory of Ideology” is an essay by the French Marxist philosopher Louis Althusser. First published in 1970, it advances Althusser's theory of ideology. Where Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels posited a thinly-sketched theory of ideology as false consciousness, Althusser draws upon the works of later theorists such as Antonio Gramsci, Siegmund Freud and Jacques Lacan to proffer a more elaborate redefinition of the theory. While much of Althusser's work has fallen out of favour in the decades since it was written, his theory of ideology remains influential. Ideology is the ‘lived’ relation between men and their world, or a reflected form of this unconscious relation, for instance a ‘philosophy’,
We sometimes find ourself contemplating about who we are and what do we want in our life. As a gay man I have found myself stuck in many places, this is totally normal. We all try to find that perfect life but sometimes it involves barriers. Being wrong and owning up to what you want in life makes the ride easier. Thus being said, I would like to introduce myself with memories that shaped who I am and the struggles that I’ve achieved.
Another theory, known as conflict theory, involves society being maintained by one social class exerting power over another. Conflict theory stems from the ideas of Karl Marx, who critiqued capitalism as a whole. He believed that the working class was controlled by the powerful few. Concerning gender, this would put men in the role of the powerful few, and women in the role of the working class, or those being controlled. Conflict theory can be applied to many different types of relationships, for example, parent and child, husband and wife, and/or worker and employer (Lindsey,
A philosopher widely known as the “inventor” of the “structuralist” brand of Marxism Louis Althusser was born in French Algeria 1918. In 1960s he became one of the most important representatives of Marxism, was commonly referred to as a structural Marxist. Althusser studied in “École Normale Supérieure” (ENS ~ The High Normal School), where he eventually became Professor and spent thirty-five years teaching in the ENS.
The notion of a “queer way of life” presented in Judith Halberstam’s essay, Queer Temporalities and Postmodern Geographies, can be quite jarring upon one’s first encounter with the alternative perception of the normal progression of a human being’s life; however, the continuous use of queer time and space found in Western contemporary films demonstrates our society’s acceptance, and desire, for representations of alternative ways of living. The complex characters and storylines developed in the famous musical and film Rent capture the essence of queer space and time, which is the possibility of existence lying “outside of those paradigmatic markers of life experience -- namely, birth, marriage, reproduction, and death” (Halberstam 365). A Marxist sociologist is a materialist and a sociologist that follows the ideas of Marx. Marx’s main concern was that of capitalism and class conflict. In the words of Giddens and Sutton (2013), capitalism is ‘a system of production that contrasts radically with all previous economic systems.’ It was Marx’s belief that all societies, including capitalist societies, are divided into classes, with one being the dominant class. In the case of capitalism, there are two main classes, the bourgeoisie and the proletariat.
