Questioning Authority In Antigone

Throughout the Classic Greek Tragedy of Antigone, certain events hint an overlying theme of ‘Questioning Authority’, which relates an impressively large amount to modern times in our world.

In many Greek Tragedy writings, there are various topics that represent the common theme of the story. In the classic Greek Tragedy, Antigone, the most central theme is the struggle between fate and free will. Questioning authority is dependent among the many challenges that the characters deal with. Antigone opposes the law and goes against the rules that she knows are forbidden. This is an act of rebellion, which sadly that ends in a devastating tragedy. Questioning authority remains to be the constant theme throughout the writings, instilling the concept and idea of rebelling for a cause into the mind’s of the audience. With the many warnings given to Antigone if she breaks the law, she acts in a disobedient way, only concentrated on receiving justice for her brother. She proclaims her feelings to Ismene saying, “Well then, I shall stop whenever my strength fails” (93). Antigone is determined to seek justice for her brother, even if it means that it will lead to her death. Antigone is an ideal example of a tragedy that has a sorrowful ending, that could have been prevented if the characters developed their own sense of self respect. Antigone firmly states “I'll bury my brother-your brother, too, though you refuse! I'll not be found a traitor. Creon has no right to keep me from my own” (46).This evidence expresses Antigone’s main goal of doing moral good, for the sake of her family. The interpretation of literary thoughts is to be perceived by distinguishing what is morally right versus wrong.
